Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David H. Berger is hosting a relinquishment of office ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington. Marine Corps Gen. Eric M. Smith will take over as acting commandant until Berger's replacement is confirmed. The last time the Marine Corps had an acting commandant was when Col. William Biddle served as acting commandant from Dec. 1, 1910, to Feb. 2, 1911, when he was promoted to major general and confirmed as commandant.
