Department of Defense Victory in Europe Day Commemoration Scheduled for Friday, May 8, 10:30 a.m.

The Department of Defense will broadcast a virtual Victory in Europe Day commemoration Friday, May 8, 10:30 a.m.

The program will broadcast on Defense.gov, Facebook, and Twitter. It will also broadcast on the Smithsonian Channel, 8 p.m. The program will include remarks by Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, ABC’s Robin Roberts, NBC’s Tom Brokaw, and Comedian Jay Leno. This will continue the department's contribution to the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of World War II.

''Today, as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe during World War II, we honor the sacrifices of all those who served during this defining moment in human history,'' said Esper. ''Although we face significant challenges with COVID-19, our commitment to remember the bravery and sacrifices of our WWII veterans will not change.''

The president signed the ''75th Anniversary of World War II Commemoration Act'' January 10, 2019 in order to thank and honor veterans of World War II and to highlight the service of the armed forces during that time.

Commemorative partners – local, state, military and veteran services organizations, national organizations, businesses, corporations, and governmental agencies – have committed to publicly thank and honor WWII veterans and their families on behalf of the nation.
