Department of Defense Press Briefing on U.S. Africa Command Investigation of Jan. 5, 2020 Attack in Kenya and Secretary of Defense Independent Review

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby will facilitate an on-camera press briefing in the Pentagon Briefing Room (2D973) at 1:30 p.m. EST today, March 10, 2022, on the results of U.S. Africa Command’s Army Regulation 15-6 investigation and the Secretary of Defense-directed independent review of events from the Jan. 5, 2020 al-Shabaab attack at the Cooperative Security Location in Manda Bay, Kenya.

Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander, U.S. Africa Command, and Gen. Paul Funk, reviewing officer and commander, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, will provide opening remarks. Lt. Gen Steven Basham, deputy commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Africa, Maj. Gen. John T. Wilcox, commander, Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center and member of the independent review team, and Brig. Gen. Roy Collins, Air Force Director of Security Forces, will brief the press on the investigation and review.

The brief will last approximately 45 minutes, to include the opportunity for questions.

Due to COVID social distancing concerns, there are 22 chairs for reporters in the room.  The seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Only one seat per news organization is authorized.

The briefing will be livestreamed on Defense.gov and broadcast on Channel 2 in the Pentagon.
