Navy Identifies 7 Deceased Fitzgerald Sailors

The remains of seven sailors previously reported missing were located in flooded berthing compartments, after divers gained access to the spaces that were damaged when the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald was involved in a collision with a merchant vessel.

The response of the crew of the severely damaged Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald “was swift and effective, and I want to point out -- as we stand by the ship -- how proud I am of them,” Navy Vice Adm. Joseph P. Aucoin, commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, told reporters.

U.S. Navy Destroyer Collides With Merchant Ship Near Japan

The U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a merchant vessel in the Philippine Sea while operating about 64 miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan. Three U.S. sailors were hospitalized and seven remain missing.
