Each month the Defense Department celebrates the contributions of Americans to the nation’s history and the Department’s commitment to readiness and excellence.
For Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Denise "Tolo" Atualevao, a skilled hospital corpsman and accomplished athlete, her service embodies the warrior ethos and high standards that define military excellence.
Atualevao’s journey reflects a steadfast dedication to duty. After graduating from Graceland University in 2014, she enlisted in the Navy six years ago, driven by a commitment to serve and excel. As a hospital corpsman, she has consistently demonstrated technical proficiency and resilience. Her first assignment took her to Naval Hospital, Pensacola, Florida, for two years, followed by three years aboard the USS Blue Ridge, an amphibious command ship homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. She now applies her expertise at Naval Medical Center Point Loma Clinic in San Diego, ensuring the health and readiness of her fellow sailors.
Beyond her role as a corpsman, Atualevao is a standout member of the All-Navy Women’s Volleyball team, where she upholds the Navy’s standards of teamwork, leadership, and competitive spirit. “Volleyball has sharpened my ability to compete, collaborate, and lead—skills that are critical in the Navy,” she said. As a team captain, she has honed her leadership capabilities, facing challenges head-on and fostering unity among her teammates. “Being a captain has taught me to tackle adversity with confidence and keep the team moving forward,” she added.
Her qualification for the team reflects years of disciplined effort, having played volleyball consistently since third grade. This dedication has paid off, enabling her to represent the Navy against teams worldwide while forging connections that strengthen military camaraderie. Her athletic success mirrors the warrior ethos of perseverance and readiness, qualities she brings to both the court and her naval duties.
Atualevao’s career is marked by a relentless pursuit of excellence. Her future goals include transitioning to a civilian career as a health care administrator, serving as a Reserve naval officer in the same capacity, and establishing a volleyball club to mentor and train aspiring athletes. These ambitions underscore her commitment to leadership, service, and maintaining the high standards expected of a naval professional.
Through her work as a corpsman and her achievements in volleyball, Atualevao exemplifies the merit-based excellence and readiness that the Defense Department values in its all-volunteer force. Her story is a testament to the power of discipline, skill, and determination in upholding the Navy’s mission.
