Readout of Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work's Visit to United Kingdom

Deputy Secretary of Defense Spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson provided the following:

Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work visited the United Kingdom Sep. 9-12, concluding the last leg of a seven-day trip that included visits to Iceland and Norway.

The deputy secretary met with senior government officials in London, including the U.K. Secretary of State for Defense Michael Fallon; Minister of State for Defense Procurement Philip Dunne; Secretary of State Michael Fallon; and Vice Chief of Defense Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Stewart Peach.  They discussed European security issues, bilateral defense cooperation, NATO reform, and initiatives to improve Alliance force posture and capabilities.

Work participated in a Strategic Defense and Security Review panel discussion to exchange views on capability priorities and opportunities for enhanced bilateral cooperation in an increasingly complex security environment.  Work noted the unprecedented depth of the bilateral dialogue and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to provide input to the U.K.'s strategic review.

The deputy secretary also expressed appreciation for the U.K.'s recent decision to fulfill the NATO defense investment pledge, dedicating two percent of GDP to defense spending.  Work explained that this tough political decision sends a clear signal to the Alliance of the U.K.'s commitment to a strong and capable alliance and also is an example of continued U.K. leadership in NATO.

Additionally, Work delivered a speech at the Royal United Services Institute focused on the Third Offset Strategy and its opportunities for our Allies and partners.

He finished his trip by visiting with service members at RAF Lakenheath, including members of the first squadron to deploy to the Baltic region to deter potential Russian aggression on NATO's eastern flank.  The deputy secretary also delivered remarks at a base Sep. 11th remembrance ceremony that included first responders and community leaders.  Throughout his visit, he thanked service members, civilians, and their families for their ongoing commitment to defense.

Work expressed that our partnership with our Allies and partners in Northern Europe is critical to ensure deterrence on NATO's northern flank.
