Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon today to congratulate him on his recent appointment and to communicate that he is looking forward to working with him in the months ahead, Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

British Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Fallon to the position July 15. He replaces Philip Hammond, who was appointed as foreign secretary. Fallon previously had served as minister for business and enterprise and as minister of state for energy.

In a statement summarizing the call between Hagel and Fallon, Kirby said the two leaders discussed the extensive historic and on-going defense cooperation between the United States and the United Kingdom, and the work underway to deepen that relationship to address new challenges.

“The two leaders agreed to keep in close contact, especially to work toward a successful NATO summit in September,” Kirby added.
