On the heels of the U.S. Africa Leaders Summit, Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work met here yesterday with President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger.

Work and Issoufou discussed wide-ranging areas of U.S.-Niger collaboration and security cooperation, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson, the deputy secretary’s spokeswoman, said in a statement summarizing the meeting.

The two leaders also spoke about the summit's significance and their shared priorities for partnership, Hillson said. Work provided insights about the Defense Department's commitment to Africa's security and its people, and he highlighted deepened U.S. engagements in the region, she added.

The deputy secretary and president exchanged thoughts on Boko Haram, al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb and the broader security climate in northwest Africa, Hillson said.
