DoD Hosts September 11th Observance

The Department of Defense will host an observance at the Pentagon Memorial to commemorate the sixteenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. will host the observance ceremony on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017 at the Pentagon Memorial to honor the memory of the 184-people killed in the 2001 terrorist attack. This is a remembrance for the family members of those lost in the terrorist attack and an observance for the Pentagon Community; it is not open to the public. The first open press event will be the American flag unfurling on the side of the Pentagon at sunrise (6:46 A.M.). Press interested in covering the flag unfurling must check-in at 6:00 A.M. Check-in is at the media table located in South Parking near the Corridor 3 pedestrian bridge.

 

 

The observance will be in the following sequence:

 

9:11 A.M.    Pre-Ceremony Commences

 

                    Introduction by Director of Administration and Management, Michael L. Rhodes

 

                    Reading of the names of the fallen

 

9:30 A.M.    Wreath Laying (Memorial Stone) by the official Party

 

                    National Anthem (Vocalist)

 

                    Invocation

 

9:37 A.M.    Moment of Silence

 

                    Remarks by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen, Joseph F. Dunford Jr.

 

                    Remarks by the Secretary of Defense, James N. Mattis

 

 

10:15 A.M.   Ceremony Concludes

 

 

The show time for media interested in covering the observance is 7:30 A.M. EDT. Check-in is at the media table located in South Parking near the Corridor 3 pedestrian bridge; all media must present valid press credentials for escort to the event site.

 

The observance is open to still photographers and journalists, but pooled for TV outlets. Media interested in covering this event must RSVP to the contact provided below. Deadline for all RSVPs is Sunday, Sept. 10 by 12 noon EDT.
