Secretary Carter to Address Service Members and American Legion Veterans

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter will address service members and veterans to discuss his vision for the Force of the Future, highlighting the continued work DoD is dedicating to achieve the most comprehensive change to defense personnel management in decades. The Force of the Future reforms that will be announced in the coming months will make the department more attractive and competitive to the next generation of military service members and civilian professionals.

First, Secretary Carter will hold a first-of-its-kind live, one-hour worldwide troop talk, taking questions from troops via several platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, email, and Skype, as well as in-studio questions from an audience of service members. The event will begin at 9 a.m. EDT and will be broadcast on AFN, DVIDS live stream, and defense.gov.

Following his discussion with the troops, Secretary Carter will travel to the 97th Annual Convention of the American Legion in Baltimore, speaking to approximately 5,000 delegates representing American Legion posts from around the nation.  Secretary Carter will thank the American Legion and its members for their longstanding commitment to our nation and our men and women in uniform, and underscore the importance of building the Force of the Future on the experience and values that have long made our military and our nation great.

Secretary Carter will address the American Legion from 10:50 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. EDT, which will be broadcast on CSPAN and livestreamed on defense.gov. Press interested in covering the event should contact American Legion Points of contact Henry Howard, 765-491-3545 hhoward@legion.org, or Debra Murrell 410-649-6204 dmurrell@legion.org.
