Readout From Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper's Office Call With President David W. Panuelo of the Federated States of Micronesia

Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Jonathan R. Hoffman provided the following readout:

Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper welcomed the President of the Federated States of Micronesia David W. Panuelo to the Pentagon on October 11, 2019. 

This was the first meeting at the Pentagon between the two leaders, demonstrating the special partnership shared by both nations.

The leaders discussed a mutual interest in maintaining a free and open Indo Pacific, the changing security dynamics of the region, and the U.S. commitment to the defense of the Freely Associated States under the Compacts of Free Association.

Secretary Esper acknowledged the contributions of Micronesian citizens to the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
