Statement on Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper's Video Teleconference With the People's Republic of China's Minister of National Defense General Wei Fenghe

Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper spoke with the People’s Republic of China’s Minister of National Defense, General Wei Fenghe via video teleconference today from the Pentagon.

Secretary Esper and Minister Wei discussed their priorities regarding the U.S. - China defense relationship, with emphasis on stability, frank and open communication, and enhancing cooperation on areas of common interest. 

Secretary Esper reinforced his interest in building a constructive, results-oriented relationship to prevent and manage crisis, reduce risk of misunderstanding or miscalculation, and enhance overall cooperation. 

Both leaders agreed the exchange was substantive and constructive, and affirmed they look forward to future dialogue.
