Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper spoke with German Federal Minister of Defense Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer today to acknowledge the department’s plans to redeploy 9,500 forces from Germany.
The principals discussed the need to ensure that any U.S. plan reassures European Allies, enhances deterrence against Russia and strengthens NATO. The Secretary reaffirmed the enduring commitment of the United States to the transatlantic Alliance and to our long-term partnership with Germany.
The Secretary and the Minister agreed to remain in close contact over the coming weeks as plans are further developed.
