Readout of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III's Call With Ukraine's Minister of Defence Oleksii Reznikov

April 4, 2022

Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby provided the following readout:

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with Ukrainian Minister of Defence Oleksii Reznikov to affirm unwavering U.S. support for Ukraine and to discuss the changing dynamics on the battlefield.

Secretary Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to the provision of defensive lethal assistance to bolster Ukraine’s capacity to defend itself. Secretary Austin highlighted the recently announced $300 million Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative package, bringing the total U.S. security assistance commitment to more than $1.6 billion since Russia’s unprovoked, premeditated invasion on February 24, 2022.

Secretary Austin also expressed outrage at the apparent atrocities committed by Russian forces in Bucha, and across Ukraine, and reiterated the U.S. commitment to use every tool available to document and share information in an effort to hold accountable those responsible.

The leaders will remain in close contact.
