Readout of Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III's Call With Japanese Minister of Defense Kishi Nobuo

On July 9, 2022, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III held a call with Japanese Minister of Defense Kishi Nobuo to express sincere condolences on behalf of the United States Department of Defense following the shocking and senseless murder of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.   
 
The two leaders discussed former Prime Minister Abe’s bold and visionary leadership, which took the U.S.-Japan Alliance relationship to new heights and left a legacy of a more secure, stable, and prosperous region.  They also confirmed a shared dedication to realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific, a vision that Prime Minister Abe championed.
