DOD and DOI Partnership Provides $80 Million to Preserve Natural Landscapes Around Military Installations and Enhance Outdoor Recreation Opportunities

The Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior are joining forces to preserve land around military installations and improve access to outdoor recreation for millions of Americans and defense communities. Through the new Readiness and Recreation Initiative, DOI's National Park Service will provide $40 million in funding from unobligated Land and Water Conservation Fund balances to safeguard natural areas, protect water resources, preserve cultural heritage sites, and provide recreation opportunities for the public. The REPI Program will provide a matching $40 million in funds to support projects within an existing REPI agreement area or an area that is actively developing a REPI agreement area.

"This unique partnership serves as a valuable opportunity for DOI and DOD to collaboratively support projects that create and protect recreation opportunities, safeguard natural areas, and sustain critical military mission capabilities," said Brendan Owens, Department of Defense Assistant Secretary of Defense, Energy, Installations and Environment. "Through LWCF, these grants will allow DOD's REPI Program to support on-the-ground partners to fund projects that enhance access to conserved land for local communities and military families while ensuring the resilience of our military installations and ranges across the country."

DOI and DOD will work with states to identify and support eligible projects that preserve land around military bases, provide outdoor recreation opportunities, and support military readiness and the resilience of military installations. Through this competitive grant process, DOD funding will support projects on private, state, or local lands and within areas that have an existing REPI agreement area, are actively establishing a REPI agreement area, or have been identified as otherwise eligible for funding under the REPI Program. State government entities may apply for up to $5 million in funding between now and August 21 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time through the following website www.grants.gov/web/grants/view-opportunity.html?oppId=347006.
