Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant today to review Israeli operations and discuss opportunities for regional de-escalation. Secretary Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to a diplomatic arrangement in Lebanon that allows both Lebanese and Israeli civilians to return safely to their homes on both sides of the border, as well as a hostage release and ceasefire deal in Gaza. The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad support for the defense of Israel and made clear that the United States is well postured to defend U.S. personnel, allies, and partners against attacks from Iran and Iranian-backed partners and proxies.
