Secretary James N. Mattis welcomed Montenegrin Minister of Defense Predrag Bošković to the Pentagon for the first time as a full member of the NATO Alliance. They discussed opportunities to strengthen the U.S.-Montenegro defense relationship and addressed emerging security challenges. As evidence of increased cooperation, Secretary Mattis and Minister Bošković signed a General Security of Information Agreement.
Secretary Mattis congratulated Minister Bošković on Montenegro’s accession as the 29th member of NATO. He also thanked him for the strong leadership Montenegro has shown in maintaining stability in the Balkans in the face of Russian malign influence.
Secretary Mattis praised the significant contributions Montenegro has made to the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, and lauded the country’s plan to meet the Wales Summit Defense Spending Pledge by 2024.
