Secretary of Defense Dr. Mark T. Esper spoke today with Dutch Minister of Defense Ank Bijleveld. The Secretary thanked the Netherlands for its continued support to counter the efforts of Russia and China across Europe.
Secretary Esper and Minister Bijleveld noted that the security challenges existing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic continue today. Minister Bijleveld stressed the importance of unity. Both agreed that sustained defense spending was vital to addressing the many threats both nations face.
The Secretary and the Minister both highlighted the historical bonds between the U.S. and the Netherlands, and the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII, commemorating those who sacrificed their lives for our shared values and freedom. The Secretary congratulated Minister Bijleveld on the Netherland’s strong commitment to the NATO Alliance and investments in readiness that address NATO missions globally.
