The Narrow Place
The Battle of Buena Vista, fought in Mexico, Feb. 23, 1847, during the Mexican-American War, is depicted in this painting by Kenneth Riley. The unit pictured on the right side of the painting is the First Mississippi Regiment, led by Army Col. Jefferson Davis, who would later become president of the Confederate States of America. Riley was an illustrator who enlisted in the Coast Guard as a combat artist during World War II. He was on-site during the invasions of the Gilbert, Marshall and Mariana Islands.
