In the Trenches
An Alton Tobey mural, "MacArthur in the Trenches," depicting Army Brig. Gen. Douglas MacArthur in Europe during World War I in 1918 is on display at the Pentagon. MacArthur would later become the supreme commander for Allied powers during World War II and achieve the rank of general of the Army. The mural, commissioned by the MacArthur Memorial, is one of six works by Tobey depicting the general's life and accomplishments. He painted the murals based on photos and events in MacArthur's life. His works are also in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
