Team U.S. athletes arrive in Alexandria, Va., for the final Invictus team camp on Aug 31, 2023, where they also receive their gear in preparation for the upcoming Invictus Games. In total, 59 competitors will represent the United States at the Invictus Games Düsseldorf 2023, from Sep 9-16, 2023.

Team U.S. Invictus Training Camp Arrival

The Adaptive Sports Program connects recovering Airmen to introductory and competitive adaptive sports opportunities to enhance their recovery and overall quality of life, regardless of visible or invisible wounds. Each sport offers a world class coaching staff, adaptable equipment, virtual training, nutrition plans and active links that connect Airmen to community-based sports programs. After attending an adaptive sports training event (virtually or in-person), recovering Airmen are offered participation in Developmental Tracks to support new found sports skills and to prepare Airmen interested in competing at the DoD Warrior Games or Invictus Games.

The Army has taught me to be resilient, to never give up and always strive to complete the task. To walk into the Olympic Stadium is going to be tremendously overwhelming. My name is SGT Emily Sweeney, I’ m an Olympic Athlete and an Army Soldier. I’m a part of the World Class Athlete Program. Which is a group of soldiers that are soldier athletes who are chasing to become Olympians and Paralympians. The world of being a soldier and an athlete are perfect parallels, you learn so much as a soldier about what your values are and how to work with a team. And then also as an athlete, you also need those attributes. So I’ve learned a lot about resiliency, motivation, as an athlete, but it then transfers over to be a soldier. So they’re the perfect mixture and I feel I am a better athlete because I am a soldier and I’m a better soldier because I’m an athlete.

I’m Specialist Jasper Good, a member of the U.S. Nordic Combined Team and the U. S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program. I think the soldier athlete relationship makes each other better. I think discipline is something you learn as a soldier and that’s extremely beneficial as an athlete. There’s so much you have to be disciplined with and on the flip-side as an athlete you learn how to work and grind and be willing to do what it takes. I’m very much looking forward to walking into opening ceremonies this year and not only representing Team USA, but also the U.S. Army. I think that’s going to be an incredible honor. To be making both my country and my soldiers proud.

The Mindset of a Professional Athlete

Hi, I’m Specialist Benjamin Loomis, I’m a soldier and a World Class Athlete. I think being a soldier and an athlete has a lot of similarities. Just the discipline and goal-setting all ties together. You need all of those attributes to succeed at both. I think it’s the best feeling to be representing the U.S. as both a soldier and an athlete. And my last Olympics I was not in the military at that time, so I am really excited for the upcoming Beijing Olympics, to finally have that true honor of both being a soldier and an athlete. I think that will be the panicle of being humbled by this experience and the opportunities that the Army has allowed me.
