WEBVTT 00:00.009 --> 00:01.953 So my name is Lieutenant Commander 00:01.953 --> 00:04.176 Sarah Robinson . I am the service chief 00:04.176 --> 00:06.453 for the Infectious Diseases Department . 00:06.453 --> 00:08.960 Um I'm also the Infection Control and 00:08.970 --> 00:11.081 prevention chair for the committee in 00:11.081 --> 00:13.303 our hospital as well . We see a variety 00:13.303 --> 00:15.359 of infections here , anything from a 00:15.359 --> 00:17.081 bacterial infection to a viral 00:17.081 --> 00:16.860 infection . But at this time of year , 00:16.870 --> 00:19.092 we also see um a lot of infections that 00:19.092 --> 00:21.092 can be caused by different types of 00:21.092 --> 00:22.814 insects or bugs , diseases and 00:22.814 --> 00:24.870 infections that are caused by insect 00:24.870 --> 00:26.981 vectors , um are often transmitted by 00:26.981 --> 00:29.985 things like mosquitoes , ticks , fleas . 00:29.995 --> 00:32.075 Um Those are really important in our 00:32.084 --> 00:34.251 community because they can cause a lot 00:34.251 --> 00:36.028 of bad illness , but especially 00:36.028 --> 00:38.251 important in our active duty population 00:38.251 --> 00:38.025 who's often forward deployed and 00:38.034 --> 00:40.090 perhaps more SAR settings . So we do 00:40.090 --> 00:42.935 see that commonly . Um It's important 00:42.944 --> 00:44.944 because there's a lot of prevention 00:44.944 --> 00:47.166 steps that you can take to help prevent 00:47.166 --> 00:49.222 getting sick from different types of 00:49.222 --> 00:51.444 illnesses that are transmitted by these 00:51.444 --> 00:53.388 insect vectors . So the number one 00:53.388 --> 00:55.611 thing we can do is be aware of what the 00:55.611 --> 00:55.029 risks are , where we're traveling or 00:55.040 --> 00:57.318 whatever we're doing in the local area . 00:57.318 --> 00:59.207 If you're in the woods , hiking , 00:59.207 --> 01:01.819 camping wearing long sleeves and pants 01:01.830 --> 01:03.997 can help because it reduces the amount 01:03.997 --> 01:06.108 of skin that's exposed to potentially 01:06.108 --> 01:08.309 get bitten . Um , also wearing insect 01:08.319 --> 01:10.610 repellent with , with at least 20% 01:10.830 --> 01:13.010 which is the chemical that helps repel 01:13.019 --> 01:14.908 the insects , including ticks and 01:14.908 --> 01:16.963 mosquitoes . And then finally , um , 01:16.963 --> 01:19.075 checking yourself for ticks is also a 01:19.075 --> 01:21.130 really helpful and important step in 01:21.130 --> 01:23.241 kind of preventing illness that's due 01:23.241 --> 01:23.629 to insect .
