Keeping the waters protected around a Navy base is very important for U.S. assets, infrastructure and for the people there. For Petty Officer 2nd Class Jayce Valentin, a master-at-arms, his job as a harbor patrolman is not only essential, but it’s also interesting.

Valentin is part of the Naval Base Guam Harbor Patrol Unit and has been serving in the Navy for seven years.

Because Navy assets in Guam are subject to harm, it is imperative that there is a harbor patrol unit to keep it safe. As a harbor safety patrolman, Valentin and his team provide protection and escorts to U.S. assets. Valentin is also a certified first responder and is qualified in all small arms.

Guam is a unique assignment for harbor safety patrolmen, because it is a large jurisdiction. This gives Valentin the opportunity to meet people from all over the country. It’s also a tropical island, which can make the job of driving a boat even more enjoyable than usual.

In addition, Valentin supervises and mentors eight sailors.

“My favorite part about being a section leader is helping my junior sailors succeed at any path they choose to take,” he said. “I enjoy being able to help guide and motivate junior sailors to grow and develop as strong members of a team.”

Valentin’s skills and hard work have been noticed recently by his leaders.

“He is able to motivate people in ways that others can’t” said Chief Petty Officer Eric Self, the leading chief petty officer for the Harbor Patrol Unit. “I am really grateful to have him as one of my assets. He always goes above and beyond.”

When he is not helping protect the harbor or mentoring new sailors, he is often spending his time with his wife and two children.

“My family supports me in any decision I make,” Valentin said. “They have been essential to my life and in every aspect. I love and cherish them very much”.
